Are You Anemic? Find Out Today.

In the U.S., it is estimated that approximately 3 million people suffer from anemia. Anemia is a lower-than-normal red blood cell count or the lack of hemoglobin in your red blood cells. The results can be a wide range of symptoms.

If your diet lacks iron, protein and vitamins (especially B12), you may have an increased risk for anemia. But anemia is also caused by factors such as intestinal disorders, kidney disease, pregnancy, blood loss due to increased menstruation, decreased production of blood cells or increased destruction of blood cells.

Iron deficiency anemia occurs because of a lack of the mineral iron in the body. Bone marrow in the center of the bone needs iron to make hemoglobin, the part of the red blood cell that transports oxygen to the body's organs. Without adequate iron, the body cannot produce enough hemoglobin for red blood cells.

Vitamin deficiency anemia may occur when vitamin B-12 and folate are deficient. These two vitamins are needed to make red blood cells.

Anemia Test Panel Includes
CBC Complete Blood Count This test measures important parameters of the makeup of blood including hemoglobin level, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.
Ferritin, Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity The Ferritin, Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity tests work together to indicate if you have an iron deficiency, which is the most common form of anemia.
Reticulocyte Count The reticulocyte count can help determine if you are producing enough red blood cells and can help determine the cause of different types of anemia.
Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid Tests A deficiency of vitamin B12 and folic acid is often the reason for the onset of anemia since they are essential in creating red blood cells
